With somewhereto_Hatch A Plan: Brighton fast approaching we caught up with ex somewhereto_ participant Krisi, the founder of the Bluebird Tea Co. Have a read of her fabulous story.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I am the co-founder and Chief Mixologist at Bluebird Tea Co. I started the business with my partner Mike three years ago and I am responsible for all things creative from branding, web development, product development – including creating new tea blends, visual merchandising and marketing. Basically all the fun stuff! I moved to Hove a few years ago from the midlands and I have two dogs – Arlo and Otis which I love mountain biking and walking with on the South Downs.
What was your inspiration for setting up Bluebird Tea Co.?
Mike and I were living in North America at the time, he is a ski instructor so we were working in the Rockies. Over there a Bluebird Day is a day with blue skies and fresh powder snow – it is a perfect day. I was working for a really innovative tea blending company out there and couldn’t understand why no one in our tea loving home country had been so creative with tea yet. So we packed up and moved home to be the first.
What has been your experience of somewehereto_?
When we first started out, somewhereto_ helped us with not only finding space to retail and test out our teas but also introduced us to a whole network of peers and mentors. We still have some great contacts that have proved invaluable, as we’ve grown that we gained from somewhereto_ events.
What’s the best experience you’ve had through running the Bluebird Tea Co.?
We’ve had some great opportunities from being invited to No.10 to discuss start ups, to being flown to New York to visit Ebay, Facebook and Etsy’s head offices to being judges at The Great Taste Awards and I have managed to fulfil a lifetime ambition of writing a book too.
The proudest moment I have had so far though, has to be during one of our recent Acoustic Sessions (that we run monthly at our Brighton store) which was packed out with local people and team members alike, all having the best time. I just looked around and thought ‘we created this’.
What are you planning to do at somewhereto_ Hatch A Plan?
I will be there to help and advise as best I can. One thing I’ve learnt throughout my journey is to try and meet as many people as possible, absorb as much information and advise and always say yes to every opportunity thrown your way.
What’s the best advice you got when you were first setting out?
The best advice we got was to not get blinded by glamorous or trendy concepts like having a posh office or spending lots of money on a branding agency. Just be true to yourself and your goals and the rest will follow naturally.
